Detached chain is also known as Lazy Daisy or Single Chain Stitch.  Unlike a continuous chain stitch, it is made up of single stitches each secured with a holding stitch.

STEP BY STEP

  1. To begin bring your needle up in the canvas and take it down again through the same hole, creating a small loop on the surface.  Keep hold of the loop so that you don’t pull it through.

  2. Decide how long you would like the stitch to be and bring the needle up inside the loop at that point. Pull your thread through to tighten the loop against the needle.Secure the loop by making a small holding stitch over the loop.

  3. For the second stitch start 2 vertical threads to the right of the first one.

  4. Each stitch in the second row is placed to begin in the empty hole between the holding stitches in the first row.
