BYZANTINE

Byzantine is worked diagonally in a pattern of long stitches to give a stepped effect.  It is useful for covering large areas of the canvas quite quickly.

STEP BY STEP

  1. To begin, sew five diagonal stitches in a column from bottom left to top right across four intersections of the canvas. The bottom stitch will act as the corner stitch.

  2. Then stitch four more diagonal stitches but this time horizontally across from the corner stitch.  Again, the final stitch in this row will act as the corner stitch for the next step.

  3. Alternate between columns and rows of stitches to create the stepped effect.

  4. The next row can be worked above or below the first.  To maintain the pattern, the corner stitches in each row should meet.
