Quiet Shores Canvas on a frame

EMBROIDERY FRAMES - FINDING YOUR PERFECT FIT

Choosing the right embroidery frame can feel a bit like Goldilocks and the Three Bears – you're searching for the one that's just right. Ultimately, it's a personal choice whether you even use a frame at all! If this is your very first needlepoint adventure, you might not want to invest in one right away. For a little extra guidance on that decision, you might like to peek at my earlier post: To Frame or Not to Frame - A Beginner’s Guide.

As a keen stitcher myself, I've found a combination that works for me. I use Elbesee tapestry frames (I have quite a few on the go at any one time!) paired with a Lowery floor stand and clamp – a much-loved Christmas gift. This setup is so versatile, allowing me to switch between projects effortlessly. And in the evenings, I can simply angle the frame across my armchair for a wonderfully comfortable and flexible stitching experience.

If you're thinking of giving a frame a try, this post will tell you about some of the frames and stands I would recommend, including:

  • Hand-held frames
  • Lap frames
  • Clamps & Stands

Before you click that 'buy' button, do have a think about what would work best for you. Where do you usually stitch? What does your ideal setup for comfort and relaxation look like?

Hand-held Frames:

When we talk about "hand-held frames" in embroidery, it's worth noting that many stitchers often pair their frames with separate clamps and stands. This offers a different way of working, but again, they're not essential. (More on clamps and stands below.)

Embroidery Hoops:

These are the classic, go-to hand-held frames. However, I wouldn't recommend an embroidery hoop for your needlepoint project. Needlepoint canvas is quite thick and stiff, making it too bulky to comfortably fit into a hoop. Frames are designed to handle the weight and rigidity of canvas much better.

Small Scroll Frames:

Elbesee Clip Frame:

Crafted by a UK family-run business, these wooden frames are both convenient and durable. The clever clip system means you can attach your fabric directly to the bars without any sewing, making scrolling a breeze. Available in a range of sizes, these frames are a great choice for stitchers of all abilities, providing excellent support and even tension. Their versatility and sturdiness make them a worthwhile investment.

Elbesee Tapestry Frames:

Similar to the clip frames, these wooden scroll frames allow you to scroll your fabric, but with a more traditional approach. You'll stitch your fabric directly to webbing attached to the longer bars. This provides exceptional tension and support, perfect for intermediate to advanced stitchers tackling larger or more intricate projects. While they're priced similarly to the clip-on versions and offer fantastic durability and versatility, the stitching step makes them a bit more time-consuming to set up. And because your fabric is attached, they're less portable—something to consider if you like to stitch on the go.

Lap Frames:

Lap frames are a popular choice for stitchers who love to work on their projects in a relaxed position, whether on the sofa, in bed, or while travelling. They can really help reduce strain and fatigue, making those longer stitching sessions much more enjoyable. They come in various styles, but they all share one key feature: they allow you to work hands-free (or mostly hands-free) without having to hold the frame up. This is particularly helpful for larger projects or if you find holding a hoop or frame uncomfortable for long periods.

Here are a couple of lap frame suggestions:

Nurge Lap Embroidery Frames:

These offer a lightweight and affordable option for stitchers wanting hands-free comfort. Made from beechwood, they have a lovely natural feel and are easy to assemble and disassemble, making them great for storage and travel. While they offer decent tension, it might not be quite as even as some higher-end frames, especially for larger or heavier projects. Still, Nurge lap frames are a good entry-level choice for those looking for a comfortable and portable way to stitch.

Embroidery Hoop KS Lap Frame:

Handcrafted and shipped from Ukraine, this stand comes in a variety of sizes and offers a comfortable and versatile hands-free stitching experience. Its design is perfect for use in lots of different settings. Whether you prefer to stitch on a chair, armchair, or sofa, the polished wooden base tucks neatly under your thigh, providing stable support. It also works brilliantly on a table. The simple adjustment mechanism makes it easy to find your perfect height and angle, and the smooth 360-degree rotation lets you position your work just how you like it. Made from solid, well-polished wood, the stand is smooth and snag-free. All in all, a practical choice for stitchers wanting a versatile hands-free experience.

Clamps & Stands:

It's worth mentioning that lots of clamps and stands are designed for embroidery hoops, not the heavier frames. Below are some stands I recommend that can support the scroll frames mentioned above.

Lowery Workstands:

Made by a UK family business, Lowery Workstands offer a lovely mix of style and function. These height-adjustable metal floor stands come in a range of gorgeous colours and are wonderfully versatile and compact for storage. Simply slide the base plate under your chair leg for a stable, fixed working position. The adjustable clamp makes rotating your frame easy, ensuring comfortable stitching at any angle.

Elbesee Posilock Floor Stand:

This polished wood stand is ideal for holding embroidery hoops and hand rotating frames up to 61cm x 30cm (24" x 12"). It's height is adjustable from 50cm to 100cm, and the Posilock joints stay firmly in place while still allowing for adjustments, including a 360-degree swivel head.

Embroidery Hoop KS Embroidery Clamp:

Handcrafted and shipped from Ukraine, this clamp is designed for comfort and practicality. The polished surface prevents snags, and the clever mounting system lets you attach it to almost any horizontal surface from 1 to 5cm thick – a table, shelf, armrest, or even a window sill. The 360-degree rotating holding unit gives you fantastic flexibility, making it easy to access the back of your work without detaching or repositioning anything.
